01 1963-03-xx-01 - Kodak - MySlides0016While the rest of the world watched the evacuation taking place at Dunkirk, Dad was down the coast at Saint-Valery-en-Caux with the 51st (Highland) Infantry Division.

The Division along with French troops were driven back to Saint-Valery-en- Caux and eventually surrounded there. They were trapped in the town overlooked by the germans.

04 1963-03-xx-01 - Kodak - MySlides0038Instead of staying in the town Dad moved down the beach and hid in caves under the cliffs. At some point under the cover of the fog some boats came in close to land and Dad swam to out to meet them and so escaped.

 

The British 51st (Highland) Infantry Division and French troops surrendered to Erwin Rommel on June 12 1940.
